Oral Cancer Screenings
The great news is that oral cancer has joined the short list of cancers that can now be stopped before they can even start.
Your dentist can brush the tiny white or red spots that are commonly seen during an oral examination. Your dentist then sends sample from this painless procedure for computer-assisted laboratory analysis.
This will determine, with high accuracy (from the National Cancer Institute: Sensitivity 92.3%, Specificity 94.3%), whether you have unhealthy cells that should be removed long before they can become cancerous. Oral cancer is as common as leukemia, it claims more lives than melanoma or cervical cancer, and is rising among women, young people and non-smokers. The primary way to prevent oral cancer is to avoid using tobacco in any form. However, over 25% of oral c cancers occur in people who don’t smoke and have no other risk factors. But now unhealthy cells can be detected long before they can harm you – much like the routine Pap smear helps prevent cervical cancer and colonoscopy helps prevent colon cancer. The American Dental Association urges you to see your dentist regularly. Prevention is the best medicine!
